The Church of the Annunciation
The location of the grand and impressive Church of the Annunciation is where, according to Christian tradition, the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was going to give birth to Jesus. In the heart of the church is a grotto hewn into the rock, where Mary lived.
The church was built in 1969 on the remains of churches from the Crusaders period and the Byzantine period. It is adorned with mosaics and other works of art that depict Mary, donated by Christian communities around the world, each of which reflects its own cultural tradition.
